INFORMATION FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
Arran is popular destination for Medical Students during electives and most years we have had 3 or 4 students. In 2008 we decided to move to having 4th and 5th year students on regular attachments.
Arran is a beautiful island and one of easiest Scottish islands to get to. There are several ferries each day from Ardrossan which is 45mins south of Glasgow. The ferry crossing is 50 mins.
With three small practices and a highly active community hospital it is a great place to experience rural general practice. Medical practice here is varied, challenging and interesting.
A vital part of the experience of rural general practice is seeing what it means to live and work in a close knit community. Meeting the people and experiencing the mountains, beaches and activities on Arran are as important as much of the clinical work. We hope students can gain some insight into the benefits and challenges of life as an Island doctor. Please have a look at the rest of the Arran Health Group website for more information on healthcare on Arran.
Students will be based at the Shiskine Practice but can spend time in all three practices. There is the opportunity to experience a wide range of GP led services including: ultrasound, palliative care, geriatric medicine, fracture clinics, minor surgery, accident and emergency and inpatient care.
The new Shiskine Surgery was opened in June 2008 and there is lots of space to allow students to have a room to work from, access the internet and see patients.
Students often find coming in a pair works very well and we try to encourage this. Accomodation will be B&B or, when there is more than one student, a flat or house. The practice will help get this set up.
If you are interested in spending part of your training on Arran, or just want some more information, please contact Dr Greg Hamill. E mail is the quickest way to get in touch but feel free to phone if you would prefer a chat.
